SKETCH + PROCESS

My inspiration comes in many forms and typically all my work starts with a sketch. I have used many of my sketches to make embellished greetings cards and prints.  I would like to improve my portfolio with more drawing and narrative work. I particularly enjoy sketching landscapes, plants and animals as I enjoy focusing on the finer details.

Process

I have found using a design app when I am stuck without a sketchbook invaluable recently. These sketches are by no means refined but I wanted to demonstrate a part of my process. With my fibre art, I often find myself considering knots and techniques for days and then usually have a lightbulb moment in the middle of the night where the pattern has somehow formed in my mind. I'll use my phone or tablet to very quickly get it out and things soon become clear. I use lines as a key and follow the rough sketch whilst I get started.

Below is an example of how I worked out the Sunflower & Daisy fibre sculptures.

Mixed Media

I enjoy working with many different mediums. As a hobbyist artist, a lot of my inspiration has come from personal connections to people or places. I take a lot of inspiration from the local coast but also my travels too. My fibre work has been a great outlet for testing colour palettes from places visited and I enjoy creating pieces from a brief to make them feel personal.

Below is an example of some of my drawing and painting work. I currently have several paid fibre art projects in the pipeline which means I try to fit my painting and drawing in around this work as I'm constantly seeking to improve my application and style.
